I don't really feel totally legitimate to comment on the US elections. I am not an American citizen, therefore, I do not vote. And if there is one thing I've learned, living in the US, is that we, Americans and French, are two very different people. We built our countries on a different history, a different heritage. And in the end, we are different countries. If only by the size and diversity. I think it is very hard, for probably most other countries to grasp how contrasted the US are.
Like most of the people around me, I didn't want to think it was possible. It just seemed like a bad joke. Yes, we all felt a little worried but come on, the guy is a bad joke.
Now, I don't want to judge the people who voted for Trump. First, because, like I said, this is not my country. I'm a guest - officially a resident alien - and I respect their choice. Second, because those people who voted for Trump most probably felt legitimate in their choice, and even though it does feel ridiculous to me, I am not in their shoes. We live very different lives and I won't pretend I can truly understand.
But still, I'm worried.
We don't really know what kind of President Trump will be. Will he be a docile puppet of the Republican party or a downright announcer of the Apocalypse? We don't know.
What we already know though, is that the future President of the United States is openly racist, sexist, a bully, unapologetic and ignorant on many topics.
And that's the head of the United State - which is not far from the head of the world. I'm sure the American people who voted for him had their good reasons, and I'm sure not all of them are racists and sexists. But still. It sets a terrible exemple. If the President himself says all those terrible things, why not us? Now it's okay to be racist, xenophobe, to grab women by the pussy.... Hey, after all, the President himself does it...
And it's not like we discovered it too late. No. He said all those things before. Before he was a nominee, before the election. He's been saying horrible things his whole life. And yet he got elected. Even worse, Trump won the election by saying all those horrible things. So what does that mean? Are we really living in a country where hate speechs and insults against all kind of groups matter less than the elusive promise of change?
I'm worried for what it means for the society. For all the minorities, for women, for all those hard-won civil rights. For the humanity inside of each of us.
Last week, as we went to our favorite Mexican restaurant, we were still joking "let's go there before they get deported." A bad joke for a scenario that wouldn't actually happen. Suddenly it feels a lot harder to find this funny.

I don't even know what to say anymore. I'm sad. I don't want to switch on the radio. I don't want to live yet another cycle of terrible news. Is it really the world we're living in now, with a terrorist attack every freaking 6 months in France and bad news all over the world every other week?
I just got back from vacations, yesterday was our National Holiday, I took the day off (because I was a tiny bit jetlagged...). Today's my birthday. I'm supposed to be happy. But I'm sad, and I'm tired of it.

Well, I'm stuck at the lab on a Saturday. Running the instrument since 8 am, and until 8 pm, analyses of 2 hours... So, I'm a tad little bored. So, a meme! Ganked from the usual suspects.
Name: Aragarna
Animal: Antelope
Girl's name: Emily
Color: Yellow
Movie: When the Game Stands Tall*
Something you wear: Linen shirt
Drink: Tea
Food: Abricot
Item in the bathroom: Towel
Place: London
Reason to be late: nine days in a row of 12 hour shifts the week before.
*Not that I've actually seen it, but hmm, I'm in a Jim Caviezel phase right now, so that's the first thing that popped into my mind...

A scientific study has shown something that I have felt for years:
"We are attracted to people whose emotions we can easily understand—and that may be due in part to matching neural circuitry."

This is exactly what I've felt, the reason I felt why I fell in love with George and more recently Tim. I've always felt that I understood them, I could read them, and that's why I felt a connection to them. Now I know why: We're brain twins!!

The trial of the Red Collars is starting today. They were a group coming from Savoie (in the Alps) that had the exclusive rights to handle transports at one of the most prestigious French auction house, Drouot, in Paris. And it appears they were stealing goods, including a few paintings... Among other things, the French police recovered a Chagall.
Must have been quite a challenge for Neal to infiltrate the group, but if anyone could do it, it's our favorite con man. ;)
That White Collar movie is writing itself... ;)

What was the last movie you watched? I went to see the Big Short last week. I found it boring. And terribly badly directed. I spent half the movie mentally ranting about the image being out of focus - which would have been a disaster for screencaps... (Yes, that's how annoyed and bored I was) I'm going to see Anomalisa tomorrow. Let's hope that's a better pick.
What was the last song you listened to? Up with the Birds by Coldplay, says my iPod.
Last TV show you watched? I've been alterning The Americans and House all day, but the last new show I watched was, of course, Second Chance.
Last book you read? I'm almost done with Bonjour Tristesse, from Françoise Sagan. No idea how famous she is internationally, but she's a very famous French writer from the 50's. Almost done with it and still unsure where the tristesse (sadness) comes in...
Ate? A piece of chocolate. I've been very bad with chocolate lately. I think I'm developing an addiction.
Where would you be if you could be anywhere? Wow, so many places. In France, to visit my family and my friends. Or in Poland to go see my brother. Or anywhere for a little escape weekend.
What decade would you visit if you could travel in time? The next. Or any time in the future, really. To see how the world is doing.
First thing you'd do if you won the lottery? Buy the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. It's all in the edges.
Pick a fictional character to hang out with for a day. Peter Burke, naturally, for a day or hundreds. I'd love to hang out with my old childhood love too, d'Artagnan.
Last fandom joined: Not that there really is a fandom, but I really enjoy live tweeting during episodes with other viewers while watching Second Chance - which is why it's so important for me not to miss the live airing. In term of other shows I've joined - though not doing anything fannish - I'm really into Modern Family and Limitless.

We were at book 4. I didn't think much of Severus Snape - he was mostly a bully, a bad guy fighting for the good side at the time. But then... Then the first movie came out. And Alan Rickman changed everything.
Of course, Alan Rickman was a lot more than a Happy Potter character, but he was by far the best thing of the HP franchise. The moment he walked into that room, I was doomed. If I rooted so hard for Severus, it's was all Rickman's fault. He made me love Snape. Snape was a great character. The most complex and interesting of the Harry Potter stories. But Alan Rickman gave him yet another dimension.
If I own a Slytherin scarf, it's not because I see myself as a Slytherin. It's only for Severus. Always.
Also, Alan RIckman traumatized me in Robin Hood. And moved me to tears in Snow Cake.

Vacations \o/ Man that feels good. I'm flying home tomorrow. I'm almost packed. I might not be around much for a few days because of travels, appointment at the ambassy, friends and family and all... Though I do spend the entire afternoon and evening in Detroit tomorrow (should be the perfect opportunity to write and catch up on TV shows).
This also means that I won't be able to attend the rewatches until Jan 11th, and will probably not be much in chat either until then.

If there was only one sequence you should watch, it's this one, at the same time adorable and heartbreaking.
video deleted, unfortunately, for copyright from the original channel.
4 days later, everyone is balancing between sorrow and the need to laugh. John Oliver was trending on Twitter France yesterday all day, and many similar chronicles from French comedians were shared all over the social media.
And something quite remarkable is happening. Nothing like people attacking us for who we are and for our values, to make us remember to be proud of ourselves again. I hadn't seen so many French flags since the 1998 World Cup (We're not a very patriotic people...). The Marseillaise - which in other times was critizised in our own country for being a violent war anthem - is being proudly sang again (and suddenly, for the first time in my lifetime, feels painfully accurate).
As soon as Saturday, people were braving the emergency state because the need to gather was too strong. People went back to the terraces. It's not that we're not scared, but we won't let them win.If they're attacking our very own way of life, then our way of life will be our resistance.

This is heartbreaking and sickening. I can't help but think I was living there not so long ago. It was my life. It could have been me. I could have been going out tonight, could have been a victim, or at least been caught in the fear and confusion of a major city closing down afterward, on a Friday night.
Each time I hear updates, the number of casualties have increased, and it hurts a little more. I'm glad that I don't live in Paris anymore. I feel Madison, is negligible enough to be safe. And yet, it's also hard to be so far from my country in events like that.
Thank you to all for your kind words. They are truly appreciated. It brings little comfort to know people care and that we're not alone.

Not a zoo, but all the animals of the creation (Well, except dinosaurs, the ark wasn't big enough, everyone knows that): The Animals Went in Two by Two.
I learned this song in fourth grade, as I had my first initiation to English (along with a couple others, including Old Mcdonald had a farm.)
And hmm, hearing that theme in a couple films (in particular Dr. Strangelove and The Great Dictator) I discovered later that it was originally the theme of a war song. But each time I hear that theme, I cannot help but picture "the great hippopotamus stuck in the door"... ;)
And.... That's a wrap!
Thank you all for listening, and
elrhiarhodan for the original idea. That was a fun meme.
I found it rather interesting that a lots of my choices were songs from my childhood (from very young to my teens, mostly). Which makes me wonder how my brain works. I think those songs I grew up with are just more deeply ingrained in my brain, and the word association process created by this meme makes those songs pop first in my head.
And I'm sure you're all very happy to end that meme with The Animals Went Two by Two stuck in your head for the day. You're very welcome. ;)
