Day 29 - A movie that changed your opinion about something

The Departed, from Martin Scorsese. It changed my opinion on Leonardo DiCaprio. I know that Leo has always been a very talented actor, but he I didn't know him before he exploded in Titanic, and for some times, I had this image of him being that successful pretty boy of Hollywood. I wasn't particularly impressed by Romeo + Juliet, and I was probably the only girl of my generation who went to see The Man in the Iron Mask for d'Artagnan and not for Leo. I wasn't actually interested in him at all. Then I saw the Departed. I was all set to root for Matt Damon's character. Except it was Leo who totally blew my mind and stole the screen. It was a sincere revelation. I never had a crush on him, but I have a great admiration for his talent.

Similarly, the three movies Ben Affleck directed - Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo - showed me an all new side of Ben that I never suspected. I'm still not found of him as an actor, but he sure knows how to use a camera.

I had the same thing with DiCaprio, only for me it was Catch Me if You Can. That was the movie that made me realize he was a lot more than a pretty face.

I started watching The Departed last weekend (and I was already a LDC convert), because of it's allusions to the Whitey Bulger case (the story behind Black Mass), which I've been following for years. Sadly, my copy crapped out at a very critical point and I'm going to need to either get a copy from the library or buy it on iTunes.

Yikes! No fun. I sympathize.

Back when we had VHS, I remember we had recorded North by Northwest on TV, and we were very excited to watch it (the good old days of family movie nights!), but there was something wrong with the VHS, and it stopped *just* when that guy gets stabbed at the UN. Most frustrating VHS fail ever!

In any case, I really enjoyed The Departed, despite it being a little violent...
Interesting cause the movie is a remake of a Hong Kong movie. So I guess everyone borrows from everyone. ;)
