What is my opinion on poetry? Hmmm I don't know. Some I like, some I don't. Poetry, to me, it's a lot like a song. Either it talks to you, or it doesn't. Though I think the sonority of it is also crucial, and it would be best to listen to poetry than to read it. I have an immense respect for people who can write it. I sure can't. This is a really tough exercice.
I detest rhyming poetry with very forced rhyme. Otherwise, I adore reading poetry, with a strong preference for free verse.
I haven't had any exposure to slam poetry, or I'm sure I'd admire the sound of it too. Exception - Sea Fever by John Masefield is one of those poems that has to be read out to be enjoyed.
I write poetry, and it's not that hard. Mine are basically just written out feelings. All free verse.
