aragarna: (a meme!)

Okay since literally everyone on my flist is doing it, I'll do it. Tagged by [livejournal.com profile] elrhiarhodan

Rules: In a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don't take but a few minutes, and don't think too hard - they don't have to be the "right" or "great" works, just the ones that have touched you.

Be aware that this is kind of random

1. The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas
2. Around the World in Eighty Days (and a few others), Jules Verne
3. Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes
4. Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Agatha Christie
5. I am Legend, Richard Matheson
6. Tintin in Tibet, by Hergé (Comics strips count right?)
7. Northern Lights, Philip Pullman
8. The Help, Kathryn Stockett
9. Harry Potter... I think Azkaban is my favorite., JK Rowling
10. The Book Thief, Markus Suzak

ETA: And as [livejournal.com profile] paganlowroader pointed out, I really should add The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, because that one is an adorable little gem, that stays with you no matter your age.

Huge part of my childhood! I think the double album about the moon is my favorite, but I love so many of them...

Have you read Asterix and Obelix comics? I think it was originally in french, I read the English translation

Yes I did. Those are French yes (contrary to many, like Tintin, which are actually Belgian).
I loved them too, they're awesome. Lots of French references and jokeS. Not sure how it translates in English.

So, Le Petit Prince didn't make your short list? I fell in love with that book in junior high French. Such a sweet rumination about friendship, loneliness and loss. The coda thing at the end still reduces me to tears every time. Like most things, it's best read in French. The English translation flattens out St. Exupery's most lyrical prose. Never sure if I'm the prince or the fox...

Oh right! I actually love it. I should edit my post.
Naturally Neal would be the fox, right? Doesn't that make Peter the little prince?
That bit about golden corn fields and the fox being tamed...

No, Peter is the pilot. Stranded alone and aching for home. Then he meets that golden child who frustrates the hell out of him. And mesmerizes him. And ultimately terrifies him with what he's willing to do in the name of friendship.

That works too. But I like the idea that Peter has "apprivoisé" Neal. (I don't like the English translation, it doesn't render the exact sense of that word)

Yep, 'tamed' would make Neal sound much too pliant and devoid of spirit ;-)

yes, my feeling is that "tamed" is more like you tame a lion to work in the circus (dresser in French).
Apprivoisé has more a sense of managing to gain the trust of a wild animal. And there's a great speech by the fox about that.
I need to find it.

Harry Potter! I know so many random details about those books, OMG. Like that fact that Dumbledore conjured up a squashy chintz armchair during Harry's trial for himself. Me and my friend used to quiz each other on these, it was so much fun!

LOL oh I'm far from an expert but that was a big part of my high school years. I don't like everything in those books (especially the last ones) but yeah, can't deny I'm the HP generation. And it was a big part of our universe in high school, also due to the beginning of the movie franchise.

So true. I don't think I know anyone my age who hasn't read it.
