During our little tour of gift shops with Nieseryjna and Tim, we stumbled upon a series of little books explaining the origins of Scottish (and Irish) names. Among them Bennett, Ellis, Hughes... and Burke!

I bought the Burke one. And now, everything's clear!
The Burke Motto is: One king, one faith, one law.
Their crest is: a mountain cat, collared and chained.

Even better, the Burke (or Burgh) family descends from the Normans. In other words: Vikings! Peter is of Viking descent! :-)
After invading North of France, and later England, certain particularly adventurer Vikings, among which, William de Burgh, settled in Ireland during the 12th century. The Burgh clan adopted the Gaelic traditions of the Irish.

Burkes started emigrated after the Jacobite war in the 17th century, and later in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Among the most famous Burke is William Burke, who moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, and whose specialty, in association with his buddy Hare (look for the movies "Burke and Hare"...) was to provide fresh corpses to medical colleges... Burke and Hare had developed a technic of smothering and suffocating their victims, as to not leave any visible injury... A method of killing that came to be known as 'Burking'.

Among the few other Burke celebrities is a real Peter Burke, born in 1937, a leading British historian, whose work include The Italian Renaissance. There are also a few Irish artists, or baseball players. But the most reknown one is probably Martha Jane Cannary-Burke, who took the name from her husband Clinton Burke. She's better known as Calamity Jane. ;-)

My pleasure. :-)
I'm not sure how much thoughts they put into it when they picked Peter's names
(esp. since he wasn't originally named Burke) but I love that this explains the unexplained fascination Peter has for Vikings. :-)

What was Peter originally supposed to be named if not Burke? Too bad there wasn't a book on Caffrey
