Working night shifts of 12 hours, three days in a row, over the weekend.

Which means it's ruining my entire weekend, and I'm gonna miss Second Chance. (still debating whether downloading it sometime tomorrow night to watch it between analyses - by 7 minutes increments - or waiting to be home. Me think by 3 a.m. the former is gonna win over...) This also mean that I might be late in delivering my weekly squee. But you never know... 12 hours is a long time...

On the upside, analyses have been running smoothly so far (fingers crossed!), and I need those data to submit an abstract for a conference this summer in Japan.

Anyway, it's 3:30, I'm bored, so, how about you ask me anything, or launch a topic, fandom-related or non-fandomy, as you please. Just give me something to occupy my remaining nights.

I can relate... I used to work night shifts... When I was way younger...
OK: What will be the topic of your next fanwork?

LOL my boss actually hired me because she felt too old to do the night shifts. ;)

Hmm that is a good question. I'm having a hard time feeling the rush to write lately (night shifts, or even day shifts on the instrument, have been great occasions to write fics in the past). I'll probably write a Fatherhood Chronicle next. Something with Neal and Neal. :)

Any current WIP? P.S . Japan is a beautiful country, I have had friends who have lived there. All the best for your experiments.

Lovely, cant wait.

Yeah, I understand you boss, I would do the saem, now I only leave my bed for emergencies. Like when there is a fire in teh lab, and even then, if the fire is under controle... it can wait until tomorrow...

Ohh! Which part of Japan? Tokyo?

Best of luck with your analyses!! And I sure am looking forward to the next fatherhood chronicle <3

I'm really excited to go to Japan. I've never been to Asia before. :)

No WIP unfortunately. Though I do have a few ideas brainstorming. All I need is find the motivation to start writing them down.

Well, Japan next summer is my big travel plan. I'm also going to Houston in March for another conference. Though Houston isn't as exciting and I won't do anything outside of the conference.

(and well, maybe, maybe not, Vancouver... ;) )

I'd be happy to bring you back a magnet. Just remind me when we get close to the date (It'll be end of June - start of July)

The conference is in Yokohama, which is next to Tokyo. After the conference I'm hoping to travel around a bit, though I haven't looked into it much yet.

And thank you!! :)

I set myself a reminder to remind you... ;)

Please find your motivation to writing, mine is as usual gone :(
oh how do you feel about vidding Second Chance? (I start to adore the title of this show, it has sooo many meanings) More squee after I see another episode.

Well, I actually have a vid idea, though it is more Tim-centric than SC-centric (but I would totally use SC footage).

Now if I could find the right song, I'd love to do a vid for the show. Probably something father/son, or maybe related to second chances. (Though probably not Father & Son from Cat Stevens cause I did already 2 vids with that one...)

I'll find motivation to write, it hasn't gone very far. It's mostly that it's been parasited by other things, including Second Chance. And I don't feel like writing Second Chance (yet?) but it's shifting my squee away from WC a bit...

Ah. Travel within Japan or to other Asian countries as well? Japan's awesome! I've only been to Tokyo and Osaka before though. Beautiful places with lots of culture, great food and great people.

If you're planning to hop to other countries - Taiwan's about 2.5 hours from there, they have lovely night markets with local food, and the Taiwanese are really warm people :) Or Korea, if shopping is your thing! I'm sure the trip's gonna be fantastic.

I'm planning on staying within Japan. There's probably enough there. :)
I'd like to at least do Tokyo and Kyoto. I need to ask around what is interesting to visit.

Awesome. It's been a while since I last visited so I don't have specific recommendations (let me know when you go to Taiwan though! There I do know where to go), but the Imperial palace and temples are beautiful. I hope you'll have fun planning! :)

Night shifts? *shudders at the thought* You have my sympathy *hugs*

Japan sounds like a fun place to visit! My only suggestion for where to visit is the island that is overtaken by rabbits!! So much cuddliness!! :D

There is also an island that's overrun by cats too, but I think I'd prefer the rabbits in this case. Being 'mugged' by a bunch of bunnies sounds like fun! :D :D

There some explanation-y bit at the start that might/might not interest, but after that is lots of cuddliness! Bunny Island Video

Ooh, night shifts. I'm a night owl quite naturally, but I don't know how well I'd do with actually working all that much then -- I have been known to crank out some really good research/papers/projects overnight, though ;-)

I hope you get to go to the conference in Japan -- that sounds absolutely awesome!! Maybe you can spend some of your time looking for things you'd like to visit there??

I agree with you on Houston. There are things to do/see there, I know, but anything that involves dealing with that traffic is pretty much a no-go as far as I'm concerned :-P We've been through the outskirts of Houston a few times when coming home from the beach every summer, and it's just... blech x infinity. It's one of the few larger cities that I just have no interest in exploring, for whatever reason. (Maybe I lost that back when I was a kid and my grandmother lived there. I loved the zoo, but I don't know that I'd be interested "enough" to go there again anytime soon!)

night shifts are no fun - and I'm *not* a night owl - but that's part of the job, which, in all, isn't that bad. And they don't actually happen that often.

Heee well, we'll have to check if we can go visit that island!

Well, I'm not a night owl myself, and if I have, in the past, worked late occasionnally, "working late" isn't the same as staying alert all the way until 8 am ! The shifts on the instrument are 12 hours. And working from 8 am to 8 pm is tiring enough as it is, so 8 pm to 8 am...

I think last night's session was successful enough that even if tonight and tomorrow don't go that well, I'll be able to submit an abstract for the conference (deadline is in 2 weeks). So I should be going. :)

I went to Houston before (always for that conference). The conference is actually in the Woodlands (North of Houston and totally uninteresting. It looks like living in The Truman Show). But the first time I went, I visited a little downtown Houston and NASA. Houston was my very first time in the US, so even though it's nothing special it did feel really exotic (and very "American") to us. ;)

I'm a night owl, but there's a huge difference in staying up b/c you want to vs. staying up b/c you "have" to. I'd far prefer staying up b/c I'm reading something enjoyable, or even if I just *can't* go to sleep -- that's still different than when you have to stay up and *work* (like I said before about doing papers, etc. overnight).

I'm glad it looks like things will work out for you about the abstract. Hope things go okay while you're working, though, regardless!

Hee! I can understand it being pretty different on a first visit, for sure. When Hubby and I got married (30ish years ago), Houston was one of the few places I told him we could *not* move to! LOL! I just *hate* its traffic. I'd rather have the traffic of NY or Seattle or something similar ANYtime, but that's also b/c they have so much better options on public transportation where I wouldn't *have* to drive in it if I lived there. And hee -- in the Woodlands, you'd have been fairly close to where Matt grew up, I think (can't remember my Houston suburbs all that clearly), though that might not have been on your radar at that point. Houston is just huge, in so many ways. I can't remember what I saw on it recently -- something like it's one of the largest cities in the country in terms of geography or something? I'm just glad I don't have to drive there on a regular basis!

And when it's work, and over the weekend, and making me miss Second Chance. That is very bad.

Each of those things sound Very Bad to me. All of them together sounds like a Really Very Bad version of "Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, Very Bad Day" — but on a multi-day basis ;-) No bueno!! :-(

I hope you manage to see the show, and/or read some fic/watch some YouTube or *some*thing enjoyable during the short breaks you have! Yeesh. I'll at least be glad that you don't have to do this long-term(?)!!

LOL well it would be a Horrible Terrible Very Bad Day if the instruments wasn't behaving - but for now, it is (more or less).

The download took forever, but it's finally complete :D So, I'm off watching the new ep of SC - 7 minutes by 7 minutes! :)

I had some videos to watch to keep me busy, and I had switched to listening to the radio.

dang, just when I was all set to be watching SC, the instrument is acting up...

But luckily, those night shifts don't happen that often. I'm gonna get more responsibily this year - now that I'm trained and can help external users - so it might happen more, but until now this is only my second time. So, I can deal with it.

Glad it (mostly) behaved for you, and hope it behaves again tonight.

I hope you finally got to watch the episode -- I still need to get caught up on the show. I've got them all on the DVR, but I need to find time to watch multiple episodes!

It's good that you don't have to do it often, at least. But yeaahhh.... multiple nights of being up forever and having to stay mostly alert/pay attention to things... not anyone's idea of "fun", I'm sure. Glad you've got some things lined up to keep you occupied, too!

That's actually a good plan. This is the kind of show you want to binge watch. It's killing me to have to wait a entire week between episodes. Not that I could wait for the whole season to be done...

Instrument is down. So no third night for me, and a weekend half-saved \o/

Yay! I'm glad to know it'll be a good one to binge on! And yeah... that would be hard: trying to wait till a season's over would be awful, I'd think!

Well, YAY for a half-saved weekend! Hope you enjoy your time off, so to speak! <3

Just totally impossible for anything featuring Tim. ;)
Especially after an entire year without him.

The bad ratings and hence the probable cancellation freak me out, because I hate the uncertainty of when I'll see him next. I need a certain dose of Tim per year.

I totally understand that! I'm watching an episode of WC right now, b/c I need a certain dose of both of those guys routinely, too ;-)

And yeah, I can't imagine trying to wait for a full season on something like that. I really liked a series last year that only lasted for a season ("Almost Human" with Karl Urban), and I was thoroughly unhappy that it couldn't at least get picked up elsewhere (there was apparently talk of getting the Syfy channel to try to continue it). It had some really interesting stories continuing, and I wanted to see where they were gonna go! I hope Tim continues to be on TV regularly -- we need both of those guys in regular doses!! <3

Oh don't start me on Almost Human LOL
I'll confess that it took me a while to warm up to it, but I ended up really enjoying this show, and all of a sudden, there's no new episodes and I'm like "when is the next ep?" "oh no, it's been cancelled".

In the late episodes it was developing some very interesting things, and it had a great cast.

Syfy's shows seem to be more like teen shows. Though it would be great if they'd pick Second Chance. That show has so much potential and storylines to explore.

LOL Yay for another Almost Human fan, though!! And yes, it was getting reallllly interesting, and then it was "done." AND, from what I saw on Facebook, they apparently showed the episodes out of the order in which they were filmed/intended, so that would explain some of the reasons people had trouble getting "hooked" earlier, IMO :-P I just thought it deserved more than it got, regardless of "where"!

I'm hoping Second Chance will maybe get better in ratings? We can hope, at least! I don't watch much on Syfy, either, but anywhere that would give shows like these a chance, I'm all in favor of!
