10 journalists and 2 policemen were killed today in the offices of satirical journal Charile Hebdo, in Paris. My thoughts are with their families and friends.
Charlie Hebdo became the target of constant threats ever since its support of the publication of Mahomet caricatures in 2006 in a Danish newspaper. Their offices were burnt down in 2011. Of course it is too soon to know for sure who ordered the attack, but first elements points to a "revenge for the Prophet".
Apparently these guys don't have a sense of humor. The only crime of those journalists and in particular the cartoonists was to make satirical cartoons. Those cartoons were never meant to offende anyone. They're aimed at their French readers. And in France, freedom of speech is a fundamental principle of our concept of democracy.
We won't let foreign terrorists threaten our freedom of speech, nor fundamentalists attack our laicity principles.
The best response is to continue to laugh. But tomorrow, because today is a sad day.
