aragarnaEdge of Tomorrow
I watched Edge of Tomorrow the other day in the plane. For some reasons, I was reticent to watch it ("Tom Cruise" and "Fight, Die, Repeat" on the poster were a big part of it). I'm always suspicious of Sci-Fi movies. I've been disappointed way too many times. But I finally gave in, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. It's efficient, entertaining, doesn't lack enough self-deprication. I also liked the WWII metaphore. And coherent. (Also, it's nice that for once, "Earth" doesn't seem to be solely made of the US). Maybe not as good as Minority Report, but it seems Tom Cruise has a taste for good Sci-Fi flicks. So, yes, pleasantly surprised. That is, until the last two minutes. That epilogue just doesn't make sense at all.
If time is reset prior to the Omega's death, there is no damn reason for all events to be different prior to Tom's character doing anything, and for the Omega to be dead. That doesn't make sense. I can't believe they just threw away all the intern logic of the film - until then actually pretty coherent - just for a freaking happy ending.
That totally ruined the movie.
I can't believe that 30 years after Back to the Future, the film that explained properly everyhing about time travels, there can still be films that get it wrong (Looper was extremely frustrating to that regard too).
On a lighter note: a few minutes after I finished watching it, I caught a guy a couple seats in front of me starting watching the movie, and Tom, again, waking up on that military base ready to be sent to war, stuck indefinitely in the loop of time, starting over and over again. ;-)
Boyhood
Interesting film, following a boy from 6 to 18. A good observation of growing up in the 21st century. Ethan Hawkes, and even more, Patricia Arquette hadn't been so good in a while.
Gone Girl
I had just read the book a month ago, so it kind of killed the suspense for me, but still a very good adaptation, and a cool story. Definitely worth reading/watching. Still not a big fan of Ben Affleck as an actor, though one could argue he was perfect to be the guy way out there, who doesn't "act" properly given the situation. Rosamund Pike, on the other hand, is an awesome cast!

This is a Canadian (Quebec) film by Xavier Dolan, and it's an amazing film. It tells the story of a troubled teenager and his relationship with him Mum as they try to make things work. A real punch in the gut.

Date: 2014-10-29 04:21 am (UTC)Re: Edge of Tomorrow - I think the Omega was the resetter, and time reset when an Alpha died. I don't remember the terminology of the movie, though, so I might have gotten that wrong. Also, it was implied, with the whole floaty particles thing, that Tom Cruise's character absorbed the resetting ability, and was able to shift time back. Which possibly explains how time was shifted to before he even met that general.
That time shift was really my only issue with the movie. I mean, don't get me wrong, the character had earned a break, but by shifting time further back than the morning at the base? They *had* to screw with that and make it more confusing?
Also, THAT ENDING. I seriously love how Emily Blunt's character gives no shits about the person interrupting her workout. Cadet, superior military officer, whatever. She is going to rip that soldier's metaphorical head off.

Oh no, wait, 24 hours prior the alpha dies?
But still that can't be any different until Tom does something to change the course of things. Which is not what we see. He arrives and everything is already different, despite him not doing a thing.
That's why it doesn't make sense.
So much confusion...
Maybe I actually need to watch it again...
